What is the real risk of pertussis compared to the vaccine designed to prevent it — and what happens when a family isn't given the space to say no?

Dr. Paul Thomas with guests Kari Bundy and Polly Tommey on Pediatric Perspectives, Show 209 of With the Wind with Dr. Paul, discussing pertussis and DTaP vaccine risk.

In this episode of Pediatric Perspectives, I was joined by Kari Bundy, a health freedom advocate whose son Mason died three days after his four-month vaccines, and by Polly Tommey, who turned the interview around to ask me about pertussis, the DTaP/Tdap vaccine, and SIDS. Kari's story is a hard one, but it's the kind of story parents deserve to hear before they're standing in an exam room being told their baby needs a shot right now.

In this episode, we cover:

  • Kari Bundy's account of the pressure she and her husband faced to vaccinate her son Mason at his four-month checkup, despite his recent illness
  • What happened in the days following Mason's DTaP (Pentacel) vaccine, and the loss the family experienced
  • How Kari approached her next son's whooping cough differently, and what she used to support his recovery
  • Kari's advice to parents on decision-making from a place of calm rather than fear
  • My own clinical perspective on acellular pertussis vaccine effectiveness and comparative death-risk data
  • The connection between SIDS, the Back to Sleep program, and the timing of infant deaths relative to vaccination

A Mother's Story

Kari Bundy's son Mason was born a few weeks early but healthy, with no NICU time. At his four-month checkup, Kari and her husband intended to delay vaccination because Mason had recently recovered from RSV — the same approach they'd taken with an older child. Instead, providers told them pertussis was a deadly disease and that withholding the vaccine meant, in their words, "signing his death certificate." Kari and her husband, then 23 years old, felt coerced into agreeing. Mason received a five-in-one DTaP combination vaccine on March 1, 2011. Three days later, on March 5, Kari found him unresponsive in his bassinet. Ninety minutes of resuscitation efforts did not bring him back.

A Different Choice, A Different Outcome

Kari's next son, Ollie, was born the following year. The family chose not to vaccinate him, and at 13 months he came down with a cough that "whooped." Kari described watching him closely — sick, but able to return to playing with his sister between coughing fits. She used a vitamin C protocol to bowel tolerance over roughly a month, consulting with a physician along the way, and Ollie recovered fully. Kari's reflection: Mason died three days after his vaccinations, a timing she says has become central to how her family understands the loss. With Ollie, the disease itself came, and there was a course of action. "When I found Mason, there was nothing," she said. "But Ollie, he had all the opportunity in the world to get healthy, and he did."

"I've never made a good decision when I've made it from a place of fear. I've learned through losing Mason that when I'm afraid, it's the time to step back and try to be more logical."

— Kari Bundy

The Data Behind the Fear

When Polly turned the conversation to me, we discussed why the acellular pertussis component of DTaP/Tdap has lost much of its protective value — the circulating strain of Bordetella pertussis has shifted to pertactin-negative, and the vaccine was designed to target pertactin. Evidence now shows vaccinated individuals may be more likely to become colonized with pertussis and to transmit it. On risk comparison, I shared that death from pertussis itself is rare — roughly one in a million infants — while data suggests the risk of death from the vaccine is meaningfully higher. We also discussed SIDS: recently released U.S. infant-death data, how many are classified as SIDS, suffocation, or unknown, and the pattern showing most reported vaccine-associated infant deaths occurring within the first week after vaccination, most heavily on day zero and day one.

What This Means for Families

Cocooning — vaccinating parents and caregivers with Tdap to protect newborns — was intended to reduce transmission to infants. Polly and I discussed how this approach failed to deliver the protection it promised, and instead may increase colonization and transmission among the vaccinated. We closed by returning to the basics: reducing toxic exposure, eating organic food where possible, filtering water, and supporting the immune system through rest, sunlight, and breastfeeding where available.
